Will We?

In the right side of the diptych, people and whooping cranes fall from head-first from the sky, into rolling water. In the second side, a figure standing on the bottom edge of the painting catches another figure on her shoulder. Birds take off and rise up, and more figures fly with them in a hopeful vision of the future.

About the art

“Will We ?” is 4' x 4' oil painting. It is the first painting in a quartet of paintings about the climate, based on the elements of water, fire, air, and earth. In this series, people and cranes share a world that could be either destroyed or transformed. The whooping cranes in this painting are a species that humans have both endangered and rescued. They show our power to harm and to heal both ourselves and the world around us. In this painting, their interconnectedness with people helps us see the interconnectedness of all life on earth. All of our fates are truly tied together. Understanding this is what can save us and our world.

About the artist

In this era of my life, I've been excited to find my passions for art, for world change, and for RC coming together. These three practices, which have often competed for my time and attention, are coming together in a braid, like a challah bread. I appreciate the synergy between them, and the way each practice energizes and inspires the others. I am profoundly grateful for my comrades and allies, in and outside of the RC community. We're all in it together, and that makes all the difference. I am hopeful that we will be able to create the just world we are all dreaming of and working for
