Fashion is the second most-polluting industry in the world after oil. Its value is estimated at three trillion dollars. It produces more greenhouse emissions than international flights and shipping combined. It is one of the largest consumers of freshwater on the planet.
Women are targeted by and vulnerable to the fashion industry. Women are also disproportionately affected by the climate emergency. Women can play a key role in the fight for climate justice and a sustainable economic system.
This workshop is an opportunity to:
*Gain a clear picture of how the lives of women in the Global North and the Global South are affected by the production, marketing and distribution of cheap, intentionally disposable clothing
*Experience a Subversive Catwalk of up-cycled, message-adorned clothing
*View ‘a:dress’, a short film exploring the environmental abuses of fast fashion through edgy, informative, and vibrant garments
*Hear personal stories from a diverse group of women about the impact the fashion industry has on their lives and how they reclaim their minds from the artificial limitations imposed by sexism
*Learn about the approaches used by Sustaining All Life and United to End Racism to heal from the damage of oppression, to increase our effectiveness in the climate justice movement and to prevent burnout
*Listen and be listened-to and connect with others to explore what these issues mean to us personally
followed by Healing Circle (optional)
4:00 – 5:00pm
Healing circles based on shared experiences give people a chance to be listened to about feelings connected to climate change. Having the chance to share feelings of grief, fear, anger, discouragement, and hope in a mutually supportive group can refresh us and give us new ideas for action.
